Volunteering at Swim Meets

The importance of volunteering cannot be overemphasized. Swim meets are not possible without parent help. Every family is REQUIRED to work a MINIMUM of three (3) meet shifts per season.

When you register your swimmer for the season, you will also be able to sign up for volunteer positions.  You may also sign up for additional volunteer positions after you complete your swimmer's registration.

Positions

All positions are easily learned, and most do not require prior experience. You will be completely trained in any position for which you volunteer.

  • Gator Helper - This person delivers young children to their starting lanes. Ages: 6 and under, 7-8, and 9-10.
  • Timer - Verifies swimmer on event card is swimmer preparing to swim. Use stopwatch to time each race. Race begins when Starter blows whistle and ends when the swimmer in your lane touches the wall. Timer will then record time on the card given to them.
  • Head Timer/Backup Timer- Uses a stopwatch to time each race.  Monitors lane timers to ensure there are no problems during a race.  If a lane timer's watch does not work or does not start with the race, the head timer will use his/her watch in place of a defective watch for a single race. Home meet only
  • Scorer - Records official meet results and times, notes DQs for events, and compiles team scores.
  • Runner & Hospitality - Runs time sheets from Timers to the Scorers table. Runs DQ slips from stroke/turn judges to Referee. Delivers water to meet volunteers and officials who cannot leave their positions. Home meets only.
  • Stroke/Turn Judge - (Must have attended a Stroke/ Turn Clinic to qualify for this position) - This person determines the legality of a swimmer’s stroke and turns and disqualifies those who do not conform to the stroke’s rules.
  • Starter - (Must have attended a Stroke/ Turn Clinic and a Starter/Referee training clinic to qualify for this position) - Responsible for starting each heat and calling the next heat to the starting blocks. Must be familiar with meet protocol. Home meets only.
  • Referee - (Must have attended a Stroke/ Turn Clinic to qualify for this position) - Referee has ultimate authority over all other officials at the meet. This person makes all the final decisions and sees to the efficient running of the meet. Home meets only.
  • Clerk of Course- Stands behind the starting area and ensures all swimmers are lined up in the correct lanes for each heat.  Home meets only.
